Discover: History of MakerBot

In this video from early 2012, MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis shares the history of our first three years. Since our first product, the Cupcake CNC, we’ve released three machines, including our most powerful and refined desktop 3D printer yet, the MakerBot Replicator 2. As we’ve grown to meet the outstanding demand of the bold explorers around the world using MakerBot technology, we have expanded to well over 150 employees. To understand the incredible future we are launching into, have a quick listen to where we came from.

Discover: How Much Material?

When people see things made on MakerBot 3D Printers, they often start to wonder two things: how much do they cost, and how much can you make with one roll? In this video, Annelise addresses the question of how much plastic is on one roll of MakerBot Filament, and what you can make with it. Then she shows us how to calculate the final cost. The answer is much simpler than you might think. Just weigh it!

Discover: Three Ways To Make

So maybe you’ve seen a MakerBot 3D Printer in action or read about them on a blog somewhere. But you’re still wondering, “How does it know what to make?” There are three great ways to get started, depending on your skill level and familiarity with the technology: download something from Thingiverse.com, scan something from the real world, or design something yourself! Whichever option you choose, the process is pretty much the same. This graphic walks you through the steps.

MakerBot Discover Quick Tip: Updating Firmware

Car owners rotate their tires. MakerBot owners update their MakerWare and firmware. Sending out updates to our software is how we make sure our customers are always getting the best experience possible. Watch the video to hear a little more on this crucial maintenance step.

MakerBot Discover: Support Material

When you’re designing a 3D model for printing on a MakerBot Desktop 3D printer it’s always important to consider printability — or how successful a model will be when 3D printed. There are many factors that go into determining printability including the steepness of an overhang and the amount of surface area that touches the build plate. In many cases there are ways to improve printability by modifying a 3D model or by adding single-material break-away support or peel-away rafts.
