Atal Grand Challenge Awards

The factors holding back rural and semi-urban India are lack of 24/7 electricity, roads that are usable round  the year, clean water, suitable housing, access to basic healthcare, quality education, lack of farm mechanisation and employable skills. While state-of-the-art technology can address a number of these challenges, the existing solutions have been out of reach due to their excessive high costs.   Atal Grand Challenge (AGC) Awards, under the Atal Innovation Mission, has the objective of developing novel disruptive technologies that are ultra-low cost, low maintenance, durable and customised to the local conditions of India. AGC will award grand prizes to…

ETH Zurich scientists create load-bearing and predictable 4D printed objects, take ‘4D printing’ a step further

ETH Zurich scientists create load-bearing and predictable 4D printed objects, take ‘4D printing’ a step further   With 3D printing now over three decades old, a growing number of researchers are looking ahead at the next logical step: “4D printing” is the popular science term for 3D printed objects that transform over time. Not just any random transformation, 4D printing is so innovative precisely because of its design parameters. Structures are pre-programmed to respond especially to a stimulus. While 4D printed materials such as shape memory alloy and electroactive polymers have been paving the way for some time, a group…

India’s National System of Innovation

India’s National Innovation system consists of:   a) Public research system (PRS). This comprises national laboratories under a dozen science and technology agencies including space, atomic energy, agriculture and industrial research, as well as in-house R&D laboratories in large public-sector enterprises in steel, fertilisers, railways, power, transport and aviation, chemicals, petroleum and energy. The other segment of the PRS is the higher educational institutions and university system. With public research accounting for 68% of GERD, the PRS has historically dominated R&D in the country.   b) Higher educational institutions (HEIs). There are over 500 universities with 26 000 affiliated colleges,…

Centres of Excellence as a Tool for Capacity Building

The results from this study suggest that the CoE instrument may be a fruitful path towards realising capacity for human resource development, organisational capacity and the creation of an institutional and legal framework in the research and higher education field, including positive effects on innovation and socio-economic development. In addition the results suggest that the consolidation of resources involved in CoE schemes does not necessarily imply a choice between a purely scientific or socioeconomic agenda, but could instead act to bridge these two type of goals. Moreover, there is a clear indication that these schemes require research organisation (including funders)…

At primary level the PTR should be 30:1 and at the upper primary level it should be 35:1. The Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) framework stipulates that the PTR at secondary level should be 30:1. As per Unified District Information System For Education (UDISE) 2015-16 (Provisional), the PTR at national level…
