A simple guide to electronic components.

A basic guide to identifying components and their functions for those who are new to electronics. This is a work in progress, and I welcome feedback from you guys on whether I should break it down into more manageable chunks. I’ve kept the maths to a minimum, since it can be off-putting to someone just getting started in electronics.   The idea of this video is to slot in some more of the jigsaw pieces involved in learning electronics, when you start to recognise components, but aren’t quite sure what they are or what they do. It’s tricky to squeeze…

How Does a Transistor Work?

When I mentioned to people that I was doing a video on transistors, they would say “as in a transistor radio?” Yes! That’s exactly what I mean, but it goes so much deeper than that. After the transistor was invented in 1947 one of the first available consumer technologies it was applied to was radios, so they could be made portable and higher quality. Hence the line in ‘Brown-eyed Girl’ – “going down to the old mine with a transistor radio.”   But more important to our lives today, the transistor made possible the microcomputer revolution, and hence the Internet,…

Jeannette M. Wing – Computational Thinking and Thinking About Computing

Computational thinking will be a fundamental skill used by everyone in the world. To reading, writing, and arithmetic, lets add computational thinking to every childs analytical ability. Computational thinking is an approach to solving problems, building systems, and understanding human behavior that draws on the power and limits of computing. While computational thinking has already begun to influence many disciplines, from the sciences to the humanities, the best is yet to come.Looking to the future, we can anticipate even more profound impact of computational thinking on science, technology, and society: on the ways new discoveries will be made, innovation will…

Five Rules of Design Thinking to Reach All Students | Michael Roush | TEDxWorthingtonED

Reaching a widely diverse group of students requires flexible means and methods. These “Five Rules of Design Thinking” will help any teacher find new ways to approach the important work of providing quality educational opportunities to each and every student. Careful attention to the design process has the potential for overcoming many barriers before they become obstacles to student achievement. The “Rules” come from the lives of historical figures and examples of the barriers that they faced, and the unique ways they overcame them. We can use the same ideas today.   Michael Roush specializes in educational technology, assistive technology,…

Design Thinking with Elementary Students (1st Grade)

In this unit, students learned about the external parts of different animals that help them meet their needs and survive in their specific environment. These parts help animals see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, and move from place to place. Their parts also help them seek, find, and take in food, water and air. The goal of the unit was for students to design and create the “ultimate” animal that can survive in any environment. They used the design thinking process to develop a problem sentence, find a solution to the problem, and prototype their solution. The process involved students…
